Though she hadn’t known Liu Fang and his family long, she wanted to honour them with a gift to reflect their kindness to her. As daylight’s incessant symphony of car horns slowed to a quiet punctuation in tandem with the falling sun, she found a little shop—the luck of the traveller. Her eyes were drawn to a picturesque hill of woven baskets. Reaching down to the dusty floor, she picked one up and packed it full of the most delicious gifts the shop had to offer: rice cakes, sweet potatoes and juicy tangerines.
